Al-Bader Square

Al-Bader Square.

Al-Bader Square is where most people in Anfeh meet in the afternoon and evening of summer days. The square has been improved since year 1997, and many beautiful things have been put in it. The wind mill, an important symbol in Anfeh, and the water fountain in the middle of the square attract a lot of visitors from the neighborhoods of Anfeh.

In the Summers, young people of Anfeh go there in the evenings to meet their friends, boyfriends, or girlfriends. That's why some of the older people of Anfeh refers to Al-Bader Square as the "lovers place" ("Multaqa Al-3ushaq").

The name of the square has changed more than once through its history. The original name is "Al-Bader Square" (from Al-Bayader, an Arabic word that is the plural of "Al-Baydar". "Al-Baydar" is a threshing floor where wheat is planted). Then, in 1997, it was called "Colonel Michel Al-Damaa Square" in memory of the late Colonel Damaa who is from Anfeh. In 1998, the square was called "Gibran Hanna Makari Square" in memory of the late Gibran Makari. That is the current name, and it is engraved on a big stone with a boat-like base.

The name of the square has been changed more than once, but most people in Anfeh still recall the historical and original name of the square and always call it: Al-Bader Square.
