Saint John Monastery

Saint John Monastery.

OLD PICTURE: The Volleyball playground.

Saint John the Baptist (Mar Youhanna Al-Ma3madan) monastery is an ancient place. It is surrounded by green landscapes and some curious rock cuttings.

During the first week of July in every year, people from Anfeh and the neighborhood visit the monastery to celebrate Saint John's week [St. John's Week - July 2003]. They also gather in its square, where a festival takes place for a whole week.

With the hard work of many people in Anfeh, especially Eng. Georges Mikhael Sassine, the monastery has become a very beautiful place for weddings, religious, celebrations, outings, ...etc.

The monastery well is the most original item in it. It is known by locals as Saint John's well.

A Volleyball playground is built on a part of the monastery land. Every summer (usually in August), hundreds of people gather there to watch Volleyball matches among many of the strongest teams in Lebanon, Syria, and other countries in the area.

The Volleyball playground and the square around it are also used as a stage for children plays in the Summer. In addition to that, there is a stage and hall (that fits up to 200 people) in the monastery for plays and other events.

A playground for children attracts many families during the summer especially in July. There are current plans to improve the children playground.

During Easter of year 2002, the people of Anfeh in the USA raised money for Saint John monastery. The money was successfully used in restoring many parts of the monastery, improving its square, improving the pergola, ...etc. Since then and every year, funds for the monastery are raised by selling Saint John Monastery pocket calendars. In year 2003, the fund raising in the USA was sponsored by Anfeh.com and Mr. Hamid Ishak Daaboul. Click Here for pictures from St. John Monastery project in 2003.
